Working under Damien Knowles (Wunderman) and Alex Smith’s (RSA) art direction, Lumiere set to work on creating a cg plasma ball to encapsulate the new Ford Focus.

Lumiere’s first challenge was to R&D the look and feel of the plasma lines and interaction points, tweaking and testing out different methods to bring it inline with Damien and Alex’s vision.

Working with the footage shot in Barcelona, Lumiere’s vfx team, including rotoscopers, trackers and compositors, seamlessly created and implemented a plasma ball that showed the interaction of the people and the waves of plasma energy. As this was filmed without motion control and “all-in-one shot”, the real challenge here was to incorporate all of the cg elements together perfectly into such an elaborate camera move.

Using Realflow, we simulated fluids at incredibly high fps to match the live action. It was very important that the fluids matched perfectly, so great care was taken to simulate the viscosity and gloopiness of the original.

This beautiful commercial by the talented guys over at UpTheResolution required some crucial fluid effects, involving water droplets falling, rolling off a leaf and eventually splashing onto the floor, to act as the setup to the rest of the gentle, flowing animation which makes up this piece.

They turned to Lumiere’s experience in Fluid simulation to provide this, and after some initial R&D we managed to achieved it using a combination of Nextlimits RealFlow and Softimage XSI metaballs.
